We just got a new cat, and in the first few minutes of its arival, my son(age 5) had a serious allergic?

Issue
reaction, hives and red eyes and sneezes galore. I rushed him to the doctor and got him some antihistamine, which cleared it up a bit. The following day, even though i hadnt taken any further action re:the cat, he was symptom free. What the hell happened? Why did he appear allergic, and then not? Should i worry the allergy will return?

Best Tip
You don't necessarily have to get rid of the cat. Speak to your son's Pediatrician about long-term use of an antihistamine. It is possible that your son may become desensitized over time. This is how immunotherapy works. If need be, have him referred to an Allergist so that sensitivity testing can be done. Immunotherapy may be recommended for him. Source(s): I'm a nurse.

Others
Can become tolerant
Make sure you use a good vacuum
Reaction may have been something from previous house cat was in rather than cat itself
Erm yes, as your son probably still has some anti-histhemine in his system. I am allergic to cats and dogs, but not all the time. weird eh? Sometimes im allergic to my aunts dog, sometimes not. If it does continue then you will have to get rid of the cat. (or your son lol)
He might of eaten something or got the allergy from something else
Just be careful because my son's allergy doctor told me that the first reaction is small compared to what the next reaction will be. I say get rid of the cat, it isn't worth what might happen next time.
mabey your son could have had an allergic reaction to something that the cat had before when your son first met him and not have it now. check the cat carefully. if thats not the problem then check with your doctor.
