Issue I was recently diagnosed with something called Cold Urticaria. Apparently its my body releasing histamine when the temperature is too low...therefore I'm allergic to the cold :( I live in Canada and winters up here suck...so whenever it gets too cold, any exposed skin breaks out in hives and welts, and it swells....like MASSIVELY! Its quite disgusting! lol But anyways....I was just wondering if anyone else has this and how they treat it.....I take reactine but its doesnt do much, and this will be my first full winter with this wonderful allergy! I have been reading up on this, and supposedly the condition is common and lasts 5-6 years then goes away. Some treatments include the antidepressant doxepin, which blocks histamine, and ketotifen, which keeps mast cells from releasing histamine. I also found another site that says that it can stay with you for life. It also claims that you can get it from blood tranfusions and that it can also be an effect of underlying conditions such as syphillis, cryofibrinogenemia, and cryoglobulinemia. Hope this helps. Not as bad as you, I don't get hives but I get Runny Nose and rashes.. Wow.. I never knew there were others out there! Me too. I once spent a couple weeks working at any army hospital. Early one morning, we had an inspection, wearing only hospital whites, and outside in Zero degree weather. When I got to my job in the Internal Medicine clinic, I made the mistake of showing my welts to one of the docs. The next thing I knew, I was standing in the middle of the clinic, wearing only my undershorts, while the entire clinic staff was OOOHing and AAAHing and taking pictures. BTW, I am also allergic to antihistamines. Maybe you and I should share a duplex house somewhere near the equator. |
