Issue
Has anyone flown with a root canal problem and did it affect the problem tooth?

Best Tip
It varies from person to person, if the root treatment ahs been started and been cleaned out then it shouldn't cause too many problems.

If it is a abscess then again shouldn't be too much problem from the pressure.

The worst cases of barotrauma (pain caused by air presure changes) are usually in teeth which do not have root canal problems. They are associated with small airspaces in teeth either under fillings or under crowns. The area I work in has a far number of deepsea divers who also suffer from this problem so I have seen a far number of cases.

I have had patients in whom I have placed long acting local anaesthetics so that they could fly later that day and on one memorable occasiona I gave my wife an injection of local in the departure lounge!

But basically it is impossible to predict which tooth will react to air pressure changes, predosing yourself with ibuprofen may be helpful. Source(s): Too many years a dental surgeon.

Others
I have, and no it didn't. Not sure how that applies to anyone else though.
I have on several occasions with canal root problems. I found it to be painful until the plane levelled out and was flying at 30,000 feet.

What I found to be very helpful was to bite on my back teeth and keep my mouth tightly closed for a least five minutes then the pain would go away.
No problems here and i have had major dental surgery and fly 3 times a year
i found it VERY VERY painful! get it sorted before you fly if you can. Take lots of painkillers if you can't.
I had an infection on my wisdom tooth and it hurt 50 times more when i was flying.
