What can general dentists do?

Issue
can they do tooth extraction? What kind? simple one or all tooth extraction. When do I need to go to specialist for tooth extraction?

Best Tip
General dentist are licensed to practice all phases of dentistry. They are allowed to do anything that their education qualifies them to do. This includes hours of continuing education after graduation from dental school. Some general dentists have a special interest in one area of practice while others prefer another. You need to go to a specialist for any services when YOUR general dentist says you do. I no longer do molar root canals, for instance. I am qualified to do them and I do a good job when backed into the corner and forced to do it, but I just don't like doing it. I love doing surgery and do as much as I can. I know when the patient would be better served by someone who does it all day every day and refer those patients to the oral surgeon, but I can do as much as I feel qualified to do. If I mess up, though, when performing any "specialty" services, I will be held to the same standard as the specialist who is board certified in that specialty.

Others
They can choose where they work and the hours they keep. They may practise under the National Health Service or privately. General dental practitioners can in addition work part-time in hospital, teaching in a dental hospital, as hospital practitioners or clinical assistants. The tooth extraction would be a very routine procedure!! a specialist would only be necisarry if refered by your dentist!
my lovely job in a dental office when I was 16!
Yes, they can do extractions. Some dentists prefer to only do routine exos and refer surgical or more complicated extractions to an oral surgeon. Some dentists get an oral surgeon to come in to their surgery to do them.
