I was given nitrose at the dentist a few days before I found out that I was pregnant. Is it OK?

Issue
I went to the dentist and was given nitrous for about one hour. A few days later I found out that I was pregnant. Does anyone know about his or had it happen to them? I've read that nitrous oxide causes birth defects.

Best Tip
It has not harmed you or the baby.
In long-term exposure to dental staff it can lead to spontaneous abortions, but no harm in occasional exposure like yours.
If you still have any concerns, ask the dentist or your obstetrician.
Congratulations!

Best advice is go back ask the Dentist office that you went to the questions your asking here. they should be able to supply the answers for you. or call them on the phone and ask them .Put your mind at rest this way.

Have a nice day....
Rightly said by the doc above, occasional or inadvertant exposure like in your case is not harmful. However, you should inform all your medical professionals in your next schedule. Don't worry you are going to give birth to a laughing baby. Good luck. There is a good website to visit from time to time.

Dr. Matt is correct. Occupational exposure is a concern, but you have caused no harm. I just looked it up and my reference says that there is "no risk noted" for pregnancy.

I would no longer knowingly use nitrous on a pregnant patient, but that's just for legal reasons and for 100% peace of mind reasons. When I was first taught about nitrous, though, they pointed out that there is even more oxygen delivered to the baby than when the mother breathes room air. Nobody mentioned possible birth defects as a reaction to the nitrous, though. Nitrous had been in use for over 100 years when I learned, so I figured they'd have noticed something by now......

Here is a reference for you and you can take it from there. Search "nitrous oxide pregnancy" and you'll find thousands of references. Read carefully...

Growth retardation and malformations have been observed in the offspring of pregnant rats exposed to HIGH or CHRONIC DOSES or nitric oxide (Mazze et al., 1984). In contrast, other studies found that increased rates of resorptions (analogous to spontaneous abortion) but no increase in malformations in exposed rats (Mazze et al., 1982; 1984; 1986). The incidence of congenital anomalies among children of 76 women anesthetized with nitrous oxide during the first four months of pregnancy was no greater than expected (Heinonen et al., 1977). One study reports an association between use of this agent during the first trimester and an increased incidence of spontaneous abortion (Brodsky et al. 1980). A subsequent larger study did not confirm an increased incidence of spontaneous abortion among women treated with nitrous oxide (Mazze et al. 1989).
