I had aggressive root scaling a couple of months ago and my gums seem to be in worse shape. How long does it?

Issue
take the gum tissue to heal?

Cara's answer is good. You need to follow-up, both with your home care AND a re-evaluation by the dentist. Sometimes scaling and root planing is just a preliminary procedure to get you ready for gum surgery. The thing is, you would not know if you need the surgery until you see how you respond to the root planing.

Well, are you brushing, flossing and rinsing 2x a day like reccomended? If not, your should or all that work and money went to nothing. However, if they really are in "worse shape" they just might be sensitive since all the junk has been cleared out and you're just not used to what healthier gums feel like. Set a cansultation appt with your dentist and see what he has to say. GOOD LUCK.

Healing will only take 1-2 weeks.
Did you have scaling or root planing? There is a significant difference.
Most general dentists only do scaling with an ultrasonic (that buzzy thing), which is sufficient for gingivitis. Doesn't usually need anaesthetic, and is done all in one session. It removes the bulk of the tartar buildup.
Usually root planing is done by a gum specialist (periodontist) in a section of your mouth at a time, and using anaesthetic. This is a much deeper and thorough method for patients where the gingivitis has moved deeper under the gum (periodontitis).
I suspect you have had scaling done. If your problem has come back easily (and assuming you are looking after your teeth), then it may be time to ask for referral to a periodontist. A course of root planing will resolve your gums entirely, and retreatment at a later date is very rare. Your gums will no longer bleed, and you will feel a lot better. All the patients I have referred have been very happy with the results.
The need for surgery after root planing is uncommon. This is something a periodontist will do.
