What are disadvantages to having lower first molar extracted?

Issue
I have a severe cavity which has broken off part of my first molar. I go to dentist tomorrow morning. I don't know if a root canal and crown will be possible (especially financially). I wondered are there any disadvantages to just having it pulled? It has been painful for over a week now. Just want it to feel better.

Thank you.

The disadvantage is the domino effect that happens when you remove a tooth. Your second molar will start to tilt in to the empty spot, which could eventually have to be removed. The tooth above the now missing tooth will start to drift down (since it has no tooth to chew against) and eventually will have to be removed. If at all possible, try to save this tooth! If you remove this tooth and then want to fill in the space, that can be just as costly as trying to save it. Source(s): Dental Assistant

YOur teeth will eventually start to seperate. My right bottom molar in the middle is gone. i have to chew on the other side. My jaw popped a lot at first now my teeth are misligned. Causing further problems b/c I haven't afforded a bridge. Go for the root canal.
Get it pulled. It hurts and you have to be careful because of "dry socket" but that's only a problem if you are a heavy smoker. Otherwise, I had no other ill-effects.
The biggest disadvantage of pulling a tooth and leaving the socket empty is that your teeth will shift over time, and you could have separation spacing between them. For this reason, having a root canal done and leaving the tooth in place and crowning it may be a better bet for you. Another option, although much more expensive is a bridge, which will serve the same purpose in the event that the existing tooth is totally non-salvagable.
You may also discuss newer options with your dentist, such as implants. The cheapest way is to pull the tooth, but you may not like the potential side effects.
medical background, and crown wearer.
ALWAYS KEEP AS MANY TEETH AS POSSIBLE. When i was in dental assistant school this exact question was asked. My teacher said that your tooth being pulled is much cheaper and its done and over with no going back for 1 to 2 more appointments for the other half of the root canal and the crown fitting or anything like that. But think if you got your tooth pulled about the long term effects. Later in life you might not like having a big hole in your mouth where a tooth used to be not to mention that once a tooth is pulled from your jaw you loose your bone mass and density where the tooth was in your jaw bone so you go to get an implant or a flipper. The implant cost double or close to what the crown would have cost you if you got a root canal and the flipper is just one tooth on a denture plate which is more uncomfortable then the painful tooth and your stuck. So to sum it up i would seriously get the root canal now while you can rather than pulling.
