what is tooth implantation? Is it very expensive? |
Issue Is there any complication or side effects? Is it worth after 60 yeras of age? Best Tip I have five implants. They are natural looking, natural feeling and function beautifully. Well worth the cost if you can afford to spend it. Much better than a bridge, as a bridge will not maintain any bone where the tooth was lost. Whenever you lose a tooth, the bone resorbs over time. In fact, it can happen rather quickly depending upon the individual and the location of the lost tooth (upper or lower jaw). That is why people with dentures need to be refitted over time. Their dentures start slipping because the jawbone has partly resorbed. Both bone height and bone width is lost. The same thing can happen when you have a bridge. The result is a gap in between the replacement tooth and the gum. Also, with a bridge, the two opposing teeth have to be "whittled down" (as I call it) and crowned when, often, those teeth are pefectly healthy and intact. If you're trying to make a choice between and implant and bridge and can afford the implant, it's a no brainer - get the implant! You don't say how old you are, but I would definately consider having this procedure done unless I was in my late 70's or older. As for the cost, it can range signficantly depending upon the dentist (who place the crown) and the oral surgeon (who places the implant), but the average cost is somewhere around $1,500-$2,000 for the implant itself and $1,200-$1,800 for the crown and abutment So, somewhere between $2,700 and $3,800 total. Regarding complications and side effects, I had none. That's not to say I wasn't slightly sore and slighty swollen for a day or two following the implant procedure, but nothing major. I'm not sure why Sallybean's grandmother experienced so much complication and misery, but I can assure you, that is very, very unusal. Finally, you asked what tooth implantation is. As hopebug said, they drill the implant (a "screw" for lack of a better term) into your jawbone. Before the crown can be placed, there is generally a wait time 6 months (sometimes longer). This is to allow time for the implant to integrate into the bone and become strong and stable. When it is time for the crown, your dentist will screw an abutment (metal post) into the implant and the glue the crown on top of the abutment. Good luck with your choice! Others It's very, very expensive and very, very complicated. My grandmother had this done a few years back. She thought it was a great idea at the time. It caused her so much pain and misey, I'm pretty sure she'd have prefered to just lose her teeth altogether. Yes, implants are expensive and yes they can be worth it after 60 years young. There is some pain that comes with it.,but as my mother said the pains of beauty. They actually take a bit like a drill bit and drill it into your jaw bone. This sounds horrible but most dentist say that if you keep something like a tooth or a replacement like an implant in your jaw bone you wont loose your bone density as quickly in your jaw bones. Yes again it is expensive. Dental Assistant |
