Why do I always get anxious a few days b4 i have to go to the dentist? is there any way to ease the stress? |
Issue I dont get bad reports. but last time the dentist said i needed braces. i ALWAYS get anxious though. i have an appointment on the 1st week of october! any ideas? Best Tip Cause going to the dentist is one of the most dreaded things. I'm 40+ and still hate it w/ a vengence. I haven't had a bad/painfull visit in a long, long time, but just thinking of going puts me off. I guess you just have to suck it up, and then plan an extra special treat for after the dentist appt. get a pedi or a manicure - hot fudge sundae, go to the movies w/ a friend. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could get a pedicure while you have your teeth done! Maybe watch a movie on the ceiling. See if you can listen to your ipod, or headphones while he's poking around inside your mouth - I went to an oral surgeon that had an entire CD file of all kinds of music, while the procedure was unpleasant - it wasn't half as bad as it could have been w/o music. Others dont go to the dentist :) Some doctors now practice sedation dentistry. Before your appointment, you would take an antianxiety pill, like Xanax, or Ativan to help you relax. You wouldn't be able to drive after taking this medication, so someone would have to take you to your appointment. But it would reduce the stress you are feeling. Ask your dentist about it. Or your doctor. Well, I always get anxious days before i have to go to the dentist. The way that I deal with it is, that hope for the best & not get nervouse. My wife is a real chicken and has the Dentist give her a prescription for 1 Valium. She takes it an hour before her appointment and breezes through...no more nerves! LOL Ok, let me tell you, I know how it is. Even walking into a dentist office would make me very anxious. I had to just do it and focus on exactly what I was thinking. This is silly, but it seemed to work for me. The smell: I hate it, so medicinal and sterile. I replaced that thought by thinking I am so glad I am in America and at least it's not the smell of blood and rust - right? I replaced fear of the dentist with - The dentist knows what he is doing and it is a good thing for my teeth. Actually, the cleaning feels like a pedicure for my teeth. How pampered I am to get someone else to clean my teeth for me. I made myself think like this the whole time I was in the chair. I am a lot better about going now. Remember they have a lot of drugs that work wonders. Aren't you glad? I told you it was a little silly - it made me feel better though~ Having to go to the dentist is as certain as death and taxes. Just tell yourself that it is something that evewryone has to do if they want to keep a pretty smile. You can do this. Go ahead and bite the bullet.(no pun intended) |
