Best Tip
Your jaw is out of line. Some dentists but not all can help with this. It is called TMJ.

Others
This is called 'bruxism' ... and it is usually caused by tension. The muscles which close the jaw contract...bringing the teeth together. Sometimes there is also lateral movement....grinding....and it can cause tooth wear. It can be alleviated by wearing a 'night guard'....a plastic thing that looks like a sports mouthguard. Bruxism can lead to headaches and TMJ pain....as well as tooth problems
It can also be you are going to sleep with too many worries on the brain. Some of which you dislike so much, you ar clenching your teeth over them as you sleep.

Try to talk to a professional - start with your dentist - end up with a shrink - and hopefully you can work your way through the reason you may be doing this.
I would not focus so much on the "why", but rather, what you should do about it. (The "why" can usually be attributed to stress. Also certain personality types are more prone to clenching.) A bite guard is very, very critical. Without it, you will definately cause unnecessary wear and tear on your teeth and the clenching can often lead to cracked teeth, sore jaw muscles, toothaches, and headaches. In all likelihood, you are probably clenching during the daytime too, without even realizing it. If you have dental insurance, it generally covers most (if not all) of the cost of a bite guard.
I am a clencher.
