My 10 month old daughter appears to have an underbite.? |
Issue Her bottom teeth go over her top ones when she closes her mouth and also her bottom jaw sticks out a little further than the top. I'm worried, should I be? Anyone else ever encountered something like this? Best Tip A true underbite tends to be hereditary, so I would see if any relatives have it. Some children simply position their lower jaw forward when closing and it is not a true skeletal underbite. This may change as they mature and other teeth erupt. A true underbite can be corrected at about age 4 by an orthodontist who is experienced in this type of treatment and willing to treat a child who is that age. I would wait until all of the baby teeth come in. Then see if the bite continues. If an orthodontist determines that the underbite is skeletal in nature, (meaning that it is a jaw discrepancy and not simply a tooth discrepancy) it should be addressed at approximately age 4. This is to prevent the jaws from being "locked into this position" as the child grows. Source(s): DMD Others I don't think you should be worried - your daughter is 10 months old - her jaw and facial bones are still growing! I would take her to a dentist and have him check it out. i would go to her doctor or dentist and ask them if they think there is anything to prevent it from getting worse or to fix it ask a Dentist I just brought my daughter in for her 12 month check-up. She has the same problem and I asked her Dr. about it. She said in many cases the problem corrects itself. |
