Cavity or just a stain? Confused............? |
Issue I went to the dentist yesterday for a routine check up and cleaning, and was shocked to be told that I have 4 cavities!! They were to be found in the molar pits. My molars have very few stains in the pits , other than that they look fine. The stains are still present after the teeth cleaning. But the teeth look fine on the surface and I don't see any kind of holes in them. They are the same color as the rest of my teeth. In fact , I have NEVER experienced any kind of pain in my teeth. I have good dental hygine habits and do not indulge myself in much of sugary stuff. The dentist wants me to have my cavity filled or have a possible extraction!! Is this an early stage cavity or not a cavity at all? Can I save myself from the drilling by following a much more conscious healthy dental routine in the future. Has anyone experienced anything like this or should I get a second opinion? Thanks a lot Best Tip Second opinion! Others If you don't believe your dentist, request your X-rays (and please tell me films were taken) and take them and your teeth to another dentist for a second opinion. I'm a nurse. My mom is a dental hygienist so I know a thing or two about cavities. The ones you are describing ARE cavities. They are microscopic holes in the groves of the molars. If left untreated, they burrow down into the pulp of the tooth and allow bacteria to reach the nerve. Not getting them fixed can lead to a root canal. They don't have to be pulled. They are sealed, using a sealant, like a filling, to cover the hole and stop the hole from growing. To avoid it, brush daily and floss. i just went to the dentist recently and was told i have 3 cavities..i asked my dentist about it because it didnt make sense and he told me that when my molars came in, they had part of the gums still covering them making it impossible to clean and by the time they all came in the cavity was already there but it wasnt completely there which is why i wasnt told i had cavities when my teeth first came in...but they just keep forming and getting bigger but theres nothing to do to stop them until you get them filled..so that could be your problem too so it isnt your fault at all...and i can't tell what a cavity looks like...i think it just looks like a regular tooth lol so i cant help you but good luck with the fillings! and i hope i helped Sounds like he wants you to have a procedure you don't need. If the Dentist did an exam and poked the instrument in your stains and you felt it kind of get "stuck" then you have very small cavities at this point. You could get a second opinion, but if they are small cavities now, you want to have them taken care of soon so they won't get any bigger. In general, small cavities don't cause tooth pain because they are caught before a bigger problem needs fixed. Maybe it's not the sugary stuff, but acid in soda's, change in medication, or maybe you just have deeper grooves that a toothbrush can't get into? Or yeah, unfortunately some dentists out there find "extra" things, but they take an oath right? Find a dentist with a waterlase and you won't need shots or a drill. If you seek a second opinion see if you can get your x-rays from the original dentist sent to the new one. Insurance will only pay for 4 bitewing x-rays a year. Hope this helps! -dental assistant |
