How long should the pain last after tooth extraction?

Issue
My two lower wisdom teeth were extracted 5 days ago. They were both impacted and lodged under my jaw bone. I still have pretty bad pain that is only lessened (but not eliminated) by taking prescription motrin (800mg) every 6 hours. Is this normal? Should I be concerned that the pain is lingering this long? At what point should I call my dentist?

Best Tip
Did you have stitches? I had stitches on one of mine that was impacted and the pain lasted a lot longer then the ones that didn't
Maybe there was some infection present. I would phone the office tomorrow or today and ask them if it's normal for the pain to be that strong

Others
Mandibular (lower) wisdom teeth frequently are fused to the jaw. Considering they were impacted only adds insult to injury. The doctor that extracted your teeth should have scheduled a post operative appointment. If they didn't, I'd give them a call and speak with the assistant. You know yourself best, but I think 5 days post op and still being tender is very normal. If the pain is keeping you awake at night, I'd schedule to see the dentist, as you could have dry sockets.
I went through the same thing and so did my husband it took me about 2-3 weeks for the pain to get better but my husband went back to the dentist and he gave him steroids to help it heal faster and he was healed in like a week.
Hey: I once had 3 extraccions in one day and I had for pain releaver PONSTAND, in capsules, but do not remember the mlgm. and it worked. Taking 1 every 8 hours. They are fantastic. I think, that can be bought without prescrpcion, but you must consult your doctor. Pain should not last more than 24 hours, I guess.
Experience
Call the dentist to check and make sure that you don't have a dry socket or an infection. If over the counter stuff isn't helping the pain they may tell you to take up to 4 Advil every 4 hours or write you a prescription.
Had a microscopic dry socket after an extraction last month.
