What kind of experience needed to be a dental assistant?

Issue
Have been a health aide for years, mainly for Hospice. Need a change.

Best Tip
Your health aide experience may translate into the dental assistant's job very readily. You know how to deal with people and you enjoyhelping them.

I always hire for personality and intelligence and the things that can not be trained. You can always learn the job if you are intelligent enough. A school will make it easier for you to take certification boards and get an x-ray license, but if you want to pursue these things, it is possible to do on your own through on-line courses or programs at local technical schools. If you do not require certification to work as a dental assistant in your state, don't worry about it. You will be more valuable and probably earn more money with an x-ray license, though, so you might want to see if a local technical school offers an evening or weekend course to prepare you for the state exam.

You would stand a better chance getting an interview if you were school-trained, but this is not a requirement. You can train on the job, if the dentist really likes your personality and sees potential in you.

Others
no college required, they train you on the spot, atleast that is what someone told me.
You'll need to go to a technical school or perhaps, college classes at night to be trained. I think you need to be certified nowadays.
I did it for a few years was a good job and met a lot of nice people. You need to learn some specifics for the job and be patient. Not hard to do.

do you mean as an assistant .. such as calling the patient back and getting them ready for the dentist? ... or someone who would be cleaning teeth? i would say you would need some schooling to become the assisant .. as for the other you might need to know how to do insurances. either way, it shouldn't be that hard ... good luck.
You can be trained and pass exams to get your certificate and your badge, but you can just learn as you go along like i did, some dentists prefer this as they don't have to pay a high wage, also they can train you into how they work themselves,i wish you good luck as it is a great job
