dark gums??

Issue
i went to the dentist plenty of times, and my teeth are well kepted up. but what bothers me, is my gums are a dark purplelish color, im asian, but i have a natural dark tan on my skin... all the docs keep saying that its natural pigmentation in my skin. but i noticed when i was pregnant, my gums were healthy pinkish.. now that i started s moking again, its back, its like on every other part of my gums.. its bugging me, can this be smoke related or is it gum virus, is there such thing??

Best Tip
Once again the numbnuts and the uneducated abound. I, too, have dark gums and they are exactly what your dentis says they are -- your natural pigmentation and guess what I DONT SMOKE.

Others
quit smoking, this is serious. I have seen this before and it is from smoking. It may be a gum disease from the tar on the gums. Next your teeth will loosen and just fall out, just the front teeth and with little warning.
YES IT CAN BE SMOKE RELATED OR YOUR HORMONES
smoking causes bad breath anyways, so just stop it! that's why you have dark gums. (you better not smoke or report me, because i said so!)
It probable is a gum virus. If you use chewing tabacco then it is very likely that it's from that. Don't forget to brush your gums!
I think it is the smoking... Smoking usually stains teeth and darkens gums but that depends on how much you smoke... And if you brush your teeth 2-3 times a day too.... Being Asian has nothing to do with darker gums... Afterall, I'm Asian and I have healthy pink gums... :D
I would expect to see melanin accumulation in your gums if you are naturally dark. I'm hoping someone can give an explanation about the pregnancy/smoking issues, because I have no clue about that.
