Does a root canal operation hurt?

Issue
Hi...my righ gum is swelled since 2 days. I know i need to get a root canal done cuz the dentist advised me a few years ago. I didn't go cuz of my fear.

But now its getting worse and I cant even eat properly as food gets stuck in that molar. Its frustrating.

So, does the operation hurt?....Will they make me unconcious?

Best Tip
I recently had one done. yes, it is pretty uncomfortable, but if you tell your dentist that you are afraid, they will probably give you a few extra numbing shots and probably gas to help through everything. The pain you feel with this procedure is nothing like the pain you will go through if you avoid having it done at all. You will stay awake for the procedure, but like I said, ask for more numbing, gas, and be sure to tell them you are afraid. Tell them you don't want to feel ANYTHING and they may really do a good job of numbing you. Don't put this off. Get it done. It'll be uncomfortable, but it'll be ok in the end.

it does hurt even after you get a few jags you can still feel the drill bit bouncing about inside your tooth. you will not get knocked out for this
Listen, it is a root CANAL! It will not be pain-free but it is more the noise that bothered me and I am pretty squemish when it comes to dentists. There is soreness afterwards but it is much better than waiting or not doing it at all! That pain would be much worse when you lose your tooth entirely and have to get an implant! You would be happier if you just get it done now, it is really not that bad overall.
No because they numb your mouth or dentures... no you will be counciuos but you wont feel any pain
I have a dental phobia. So my denist gave me these pills to relax me. Also, gave me the numbing medicane. I was more sore the next day then I was durning the operation. The worse part durning the operation for me was the wait...it takes a few hours to complete.
actually it depends on this - is the root completely dead or not. if it is dead completely it does not hurt ( mine was dead , i had to take medication before the operation , i went for 8 sittings but it did not hurt). but if the root is not completely dead you need a local anesthetic injected and then it does not hurt .
It depends on two factors. One is you and your mentality. The other is if the nerve is dead.

I've had three root canals done. One the nerve was alive - the dentist killed it and we moved on.

I am allergic to novacaine, and I have had this work done without any medication. Just my mind thrown into a corner of the room while the work was done. Except for that nerve, I was always fine. But I'm fine sitting in a dentist chair getting teeth drilled. Sort of like combat training... I was taught self-hypnosis only for the doctor's office and it has worked for me.

BTW - the last root canal - this may throw you off, but it felt like the dentist was scratching from the inside out, and the itch in the tooth was being taken care of. No pain. She gave me a chocolate when I was done.
