why shouldn't young children use adult toothpaste?

Issue
why shouldn't young children use adult toothpaste?

Best Tip
Unitl a child is able (and willling) to spit on command and not swallow fluoride toothpaste they should be using a non-fluoridated toothpaste. This is because while they have their primary teeth in their mouth their adult teeth are beginning to develop in the jaw and when they swallow fluroidated toothpaste they are ingesting too high a level of fluoride and that can result in the formation of white marks on the surface of their adult teeth (fluorosis). Fluoride is a wonderful thing in minute quanitites - it has done more than almost any other individual ingredient to strengthen teeth and help avoid decay. but more isn't better. There is an optimal amount and too much can cause problems.

Others
i think they say the flouride content is higher, but adult toothpaste is ok when a pea size amount is used.
I dont think it matters, u should just tell them dont swallow it.
Adult toothpaste is more abrasive and would damage a childs milk teeth.
The dentists in my area tell you to let young children use adult paste as there is low fluoride in the water round here so they need it,aparantly!
It has soemthing to do with flouride. I am not sure and even though I have two little ones I have never followed that. I used the baby toothpaste for a little while but I swtiched and use adult toothpaste in a very small quantity now that they are 4 and 3.
There is a risk of dental fluorosis. ie too much Fluoride. whilst fluoride will protect your childs teeth from decay too much can cause whitish (or even brown) discolouration.
