Issue the dentist suggested she get it extracted that would be the cheapest way to go, wouldn't that be bad for her because it would start shifting her other teeth? Also, couldn't they still save it by doing a root canal and/or crown? Kinda confused on how all that works. Best Tip First of all it depends how old your sister is. If she is young and this is a primary tooth that is near exfoliation it's best to take it out. If the adult tooth below it isn't ready to erupt then either a root canal and stainless steel crown can be done, or have the tooth extracted and a space maintainer placed. Now if it is a adult tooth that isn't a wisdom tooth. Than it is entirely possible to save it, as long as the restoration (crown) will have a good long term success. Also infection that occur can reduce the bone quality around the tooth making the long term prognosis poor even with a root canal. If it is a widom tooth have it extracted. If the tooth is removed it's very possible that the teeth next to it will shift in it's place and also the tooth that contacts it in the opposite arch will move. Replacing it with a implant (first choice) or a bridge are the best options. She can also have a removable partial denture made but I don't think they look as natural as the other options. Lastly don't let the Dentist pick treatment for her based on whats cheapest to do. Make him or her give you all the options than you choose based on your needs. If there is enough tooth left they can do a root canal, but the cost is much higher than an extraction. Well, yes, pulling it is the cheapest way to go. IF the dentist says that it can be saved, then she would need a root canal and then a crown to protect it. It's very expensive and most dental insurances only pay a little bit on root canals and nothing on crowns. The cost for both is could up around $3,000. I had 5 root canals and 3 abscessed teeth. Try and keep the real ones, it's worth it. Gums don't like fake teeth as much as they like the real ones. It's is not a big deal at first but I have had mine for 10 years and the real ones are doing better than the fake ones where the gums are beginning to receed. Sorry, there is no way for us to answer this without seeing the tooth or an x-ray of the tooth. Call your dental office & see if it can be saved with a root canal & a crown. |
