Issue My husband was recently told he was diabetic and I need help finding him recipes he can cook as well and that he will like. Also I am having trouble all the sites I go to want to use a credit card and I don't like to give that stuff out. Please help Best Tip Hi there. I was diagnoised about 8 months ago and have done many many searches for diabetic recipes. The first thing you should know is BE CAREFUL OF DIABETIC RECIPES! Make sure that your husband's doctor (preferable Endo) sends him to a nutritionist that specializes in diabetics. That nutritionists will give him a meal plan that lays out how many carbs, calories, etc he should have per meal/snack and then you can plan meals around this. The reason that I say to be careful of diabetic recipes is that I have seen many of them that claim to be "diabetic" but list the carb content at 96 grams per serving (for example) and that is MORE THAN TWICE the number of carbs I can have PER MEAL (45 carbs per meal for meal) let alone for one item of the meal. This is why a visit to a nutritionist should be your first stop. Important things you should know in the meantime. 1. PAINT YOUR PLATE WITH COLOR. If you are eating lots of bright colors (vegetables, etc) chances are you are on your way to eating healthy. (This goes for non diabetics as well.) 2. READ ALL LABELS ALL THE TIME: Even if you think you know the nutrition information, look at the label. Nutritional labels have changed in recent years and they making eating healthy easier than ever before. 4. PORTION CONTROL. Once you really take a hard look at what one serving is you may find yourself making healthier choices. For example, I "can" have mashed potatoes but the serving size is so small I prefer to use my carbs elsewhere. 5. GET RID OF THE PROCESSED FOODS. Goodbye Hamburger Helper, etc. All those chemicals are not doing either of you any good and is really hurting your diabetic. Stay fresh and make the stuff homemade. Besides, it'll taste a whole lot better. Trust me on this. 6. AIM FOR EATING HEALTHY. We all know what we should be doing. Now, more than ever you need to stop and think about what you are ingesting. Are those french fries really worth it? Having said all of this here are a few sites I like. I would NEVER pay for a recipe site so they are all free. http://www.recipezaar.com (This site allows you to use filters like "lower in carbs or lower in fat, etc.) www.lowcarbfriends.com www.deliciousdecisions.com (American Heart Association) http://www.alcoa.com/reynoldskitchens/en... http://vgs.diabetes.org/recipe/index.jsp... These are only a few. I have many other sites bookmarked on my computer at home. If you want more just email me. :) Bottom line....In the beginning it will take a while educating yourself (and your hubby) but before long you will learn cook/eat healthy for both of you. Want to know a secret? Since I changed my cooking even my (non-diabetic) hubby has lost weight. ;) Others urinate in a cup, then add some *emen. that makes perfect recipe for salad dressing. I call it Creamy lemon. go to the american diabetes association web site it is very educational These seem fairly easy... Websites: http://www.diabetic-recipes.com... http://allrecipes.com/diabetic-recipes.a... Books: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... http://www.amazon.com/easy-delicious-dia... Best of luck! I know how tough it is. This one looks pretty good also you can go to ask.com and put in diabetic recipes it comes up with a lot of different free sites http://www.diabetic-recipes.com/...
