Anyone who knows/has Left Ventricular Hypertrophy?

Issue
I am diagnosed with Mild Left Ventricular Hypertrophy. They have said the wall (IVS) is 17mm instead of prescribed 11mm. I am a non-smoker / non alcoholic / veggiterian / age 26. What are my risk factors. Doctors told me noting to worry and told me to avoid any streneous activities. i am adviced to take Betolac 50 mg per day. Any one who know about this plz advice? thanks

Left ventricular hypertrophy is a common condition met in athletes, and therefore physiological, where nothing is to be done if the condition is asymptomatic (when there are no problems detected by the patient). As abnormality, it is then seen in hypertensives, when muscles of the heart do get hypertrophied (bulky) with forceful pumping of blood out of the heart to various organs of the body. It can also be congenital development (by birth) or a genetic trait which is passed in families. Treatment is usually necessary for all the other types of LVH except the first variety. Betaloc is one of the simplest of the medicines prescribed for you, which will slow down your heart rate and would therefore decrease the work load of your heart and therefore prevent further aggravation of the hypertrophy.

Others
I don't know if i can help you. But i know that our heart has 4 chambers. Two (atrium and ventricular) on the right side and two(atrium and ventricular) on the left side. Word "hypertrophy" means-excessive development of an organ or part ; increase in bulk (as by thickening of muscle fibers) without multiplication of parts.
You should talk to your Dr. Good luck and feel good!
LVH can be cause by hypertension, anemia, arrhythmia, chronic renal disease,.... if you want to find out the causes simply , i can tell you that every thing which make the left ventricle to pump more blood or eveything which make its work more difficult can cause LVH. even we see LVH in athletes because of the hard work of heart for pumping more and more blood to their muscles.
a doctor should do a true physical exam to find out the exact reson. as the priscription for you is "Betaloc" i can tell you that may be you are somehow hypetensive. aren't you? what is your blood pressure? betaloc belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers,Blocking the beta receptors in the heart causes the heart to beat more slowly and with less force. The heart therefore uses less energy and the pain of angina is prevented. Abnormal heart rhythms are also prevented.Due to the heart beating more slowly and with less force, the pressure at which blood is pumped out of the heart to the rest of the body is reduced. This is just one of the ways in which beta blockers help to reduce blood pressure, however the whole mechanism is not fully understood.
however do as your doctor tell you, he/she did it well!
Here's a great article on Left Ventricular Hypertrophy - the 5th section talks about treatment:

I was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy in Jan this year. My septum, which is the wall that seperates the bottom chambers (ventricles), was 3.1 cm, and normal is about 1.0 cm, and my left ventricle is also severely enlarged. I also have an enlarged atrium, not sure the measurements off hand, but its about 3 times the size of a normal atrium. With that being the case, I was at high risk of Sudden Cardiac Death and was recommended to get implanted with an ICD (pacemaker). I am currently on a beta blocker and my symtoms are controlled by that. LVH is a big deal and could get worse as time passes, but listen to what your doctor tells you and you will be fine. I also strongly recommend getting a second opinion. I was diagnosed by a local cardiologist that had me on the wrong medication that made my symtoms worse and he refused to take me off of them, so I got a second opinion. My HCM specialist took me off that medication and put me on what I am currently taking, and I feel much better. Good luck to you and get that second opinion! Also I am 24 years old if that helps!
