Issue antibiotics, but the area is still extemely sore, and hard as a rock. Anyone ever experiance this before? Best Tip As you can see by the attached article, this is typical for an abcess. Many people mistake this for a "spider bite." It is important that your doctor obtain a culture of the abcess to identify the specific bacteria which is causing the abcess. It is true the bacteria is usually staph but there is growing drug-resistant staph called MRSA for methicillin resistant staph aureus. For this your husband should be taking Septra AKA Bactrim unless he has a sulfa allergy and then he should take doxycycline. Check with your doctor for more information and before making any changes in his treatment. The area will be very sore due to the intense inflammation. He should be returning every day or two to have the packing changed until there is no more pus. Others If the area is still hard and extremely sore there is still a good chance that there is active infection remaining inside and if this is true then the antibiotics won't help since as soon as he quits taking them the staph will start growing again. Is he running any fever - either full body or locally on the hard and painful area? If so, this would be an additional warning sign. I'd return to the Dr and ask about having an open drain left from the area so the pus and staph can drain out instead of creating an internal abscess. This is what helped me finally get rid of a staph infection that resulted in cellulitis that was unresponsive to antibiotics.
