I think the answer to this question depends on which study you read up on. For the most part, there tends to be evidence that women do better with memory and verbal tests...while, men tend to do better with visual and spatial abilities. Another great debate...

I think it's a topic that revolves around the consideration of genetics, environment, and education more than male vs. female in this case.
