Has anyone had a really positive experience with long term therapy? |
Issue I've just started a course of talking therapy likely to take around a year, and I'm really enthusiastic about it, but still a little wary as it seems like a long time and a lot of money, so I'd just like to know if there is anyone out there who has had this kind of therapy who can kind of give me an idea of how it went for them, positive or negative. Thanks! Best Tip It depends a little on what type of therapy you are embarking on- CBT? Psychodynamic? Psychoanalytic? CAT? etc etc. I've been in emotionally focussed therapy for the last few months (kind of psychodynamic, but with a real emphasis on what are you are feeling in the moment, where the feelings come from and working through any negative impact of trauma assosciated with the feelings in the here and now) and it has done me a power of good (much more than a few years in traditional 'on the couch' psychoanalytic psychotherapy). It's really difficult to answer answer your question fully though, because in the end what kind of therapy will work for you is an entirely individual matter. There is some quite clever meta-analyses of psychotherapy outcome research papers which suggests that the single biggest predictor of positive outcome from therapy is 'fit' between therapist and patient- ie it don 't really matter, as long as you and your therapist see broadly eye-to-eye! (paper was called "All have Won, so all must have prizes"- a quote from Alice in Wonderland, but I can't remember teh authors, sorry). Really hope it works out for you. Others Hi I haven't been in therapy but I am a cousellor and have seen a lot of positive results from clients, try it see if you like it, it may not suit you- if it doesn't what have you lost other than money, but if it works you will be richer in so many ways I'm currently seeing a psychotherapist three times a week for a year or more, and the prospect does seem rather scary. However, it's proven to be very beneficial, getting to the depths of different problems and helping me to tackle them. Although I don't get on with my psych particularly well, he's not a bad chap. Personally, I do find it rather intimidating, the psychotherapy is very different to counselling or seeing a psychiatrist, but its helpful nonetheless. good luck, and I hope that things work out. |
