we dont hear much about boils nowadays, i can remember my sister crying because my dad was trying to squeeze the boils on her bum. i dont know what causes them but i guess alexander flemming contributed to its rareity. Source(s): my grandad douglas ivan middleton was his driver during ww2.

My science teacher told me a story of his friend who had a giant boil on his back and when he went to sleep at night he heard a pop and he saw that it had ruptured. He was in trememdous pain and his bed was wet with puss. That's all I know about boils.

No they are an infection. Can be caused by blocked pores.
No there an infection you need antibiotics
I had a boil once, It Sucked...you need antibiotics...I got the antibiotics and a few days later the puss started oozing out and I had a hole where the boil was for like 6 months. My Doc said that most likely I had gotten bit by something and then it got infected and turned into a boil. Yuk
