Psychiatry is the treatment of underlying mental problems. Psychology is the understanding of how the brain (coupled with the central nervous system) actually works.
psychology is something that you dont have to be a doctor to practice and also means you can produce your own methods of measuring someones mental state. psychiatry is practised by doctors and goes on studies of other drs - or so i was told!! (probs wrong but i shall blame them!)
i believe psychiatry is the medical practice of mental health.. a psychiatrist is a MD that can prescribe medication. psychology is the study of everything related to mental health.. it could be anywhere from abnormal psyc to studying how the eye works biologically and still fall under the realm of psychology. a psychologist takes more of an analytical and counseling approach to helping people with mental health issues.
phychiatry treats mental illness with medicine
phycology uses therapy
What it boils down to: A psychiatrist has gone to medical school and has a degree from medical school. S/he can prescribe medication.

A psychologist has a master's degree or more, but has not completed medical school or gone to it, and possibly does not intend to. S/he cannot prescribe medication.
Psychiatry is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental illness 鈥?both in itself and in bodily illness ('psychiatry in medicine') 鈥?such as clinical depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. Its primary goal is the relief of mental suffering and improvement of mental well-being. This is sometimes done by first doing a thorough diagnostic assessment of the person from a biological, psychological, and social/cultural perspective. An illness or problem can then be managed by medication or various forms of psychotherapy. The word 'psychiatry' derives from the Greek for "healer of the spirit".

Psychology is an academic and applied field involving the study of the human mind, brain, and behavior. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness.

Psychology differs from anthropology, economics, political science, and sociology in seeking to explain the mental processes and behavior of individuals. Psychology differs from biology and neuroscience in that it is primarily concerned with the interaction of mental processes and behavior, and of the overall processes of a system, and not simply the biological or neural processes themselves, though the subfield of neuropsychology combines the study of the actual neural processes with the study of the mental effects they have subjectively produced.
