Psychiatry is the study of mental disorders and their diagnosis, management and prevention. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have qualified in Psychiatry. Differences between them are disappearing thesedays. In some countries Clinical Psychologists can prescribe drugs and they are very close to psychiatrists. Others One can prescribe medications, the other does counseling only. I can't remember which is which though. A psychiatrist has a medical degree and is a doctor. A psychologist doensn't. A psychiatrist has an MD degree and has been through and successfully completed medical school before doing a psychiatry residency. He/she can prescribe drugs. A psychologist has been through a Ph.D. or Psy.D. program and cannot prescribe drugs. They are more likely to be the leader of therapy sessions or individual therapy.
