Buspar and Xanax?

Issue
My new doctor put me on xanax for anxiety disorder and I'm already on buspar. He wants me to taper the buspar for a few weeks and then quit it. How do I do that? He wasn't very clear and now it's the weekend. Do you know if there will be bad reactions from stopping the buspar? What about side effects while taking both together right now? Thanks!

Best Tip
You won't have very many side effects from coming off the Buspar, short of nausea. You can suffer more serious withdrawl symptoms if you don't wean off of the medication as he suggests. Taking the Buspar and Xanax will make you sleepier than usual, because it did me, but I was going the other way around. From Xanax to Buspar.
Weaning consists of decreasing the amount of buspar you are taking over time until you can eventually stop, so that you don't have any ill or bad side effects. If you just quit cold turkey, you could have some bad side effects.
Be sure to take your meds exactly like the Dr. tells you. Xanax is very addictive, and difficult to come off of once you start taking it. A persons tolerance to the drug builds very quickly making the need for a larger dose necessary until you max out on what an adult can be prescribed. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Others
Xanax is addictive, so try to use it when you need to. Have you checked into acupuncture? It helped me go drug free and I've got anxiety disorder and panic disorder and depression. I feel great!!

Anyway, I had to taper off Paxil which is very similar to Buspar. First, get a pill splitter. You can get one at the drug store for a couple of bucks. Take a weeks worth of Buspar and split the pills in half. Take half dose of Buspar for two weeks.

You may feel dizzy, a bit out of whack, headachy or you may feel no changes at all. After a couple of weeks and if you're feeling ok (if you're not feeling ok, continue taking half dose for another week or so), cut the dose in half again. Take the pill splitter and cut the pills into 4 equal parts by splitting the pill in half and then splitting the halves in half. Do this for two weeks and see how you feel. If you feel ok, take 1/4 dose every other day for a couple weeks. Then you can stop taking it completely.

Now, you may be able to take a half dose for a week and then go to quarter dose. It's very individual. When I tapered off, I took 1/2 dose of Paxil for 3 weeks before I went to 1/4 dose. I did that for almost a month and then I just stopped taking it.

Hope that helps!
just take less and less of the buspar every day...if you need to split the pills in half, that is okay too.
Take yourself off buspar very slowy. I don't know how much you're on but taper it so you're taking a third less each week, so that by the end of your third week you should be off it. If you do this too fast, you could get withdrawls and they are no fun. Maybe try a web sight to see if there are any interactions between the buspar and xanax.Remember xanax is very habit forming. Good luck!
I quit taking Buspar after being on it for about 7 months. I didn't have any problem at all when I stopped. I suppose it varies.
