If two or more people in your family suffer from depression and their lives end with Suicide?

Issue
does that make commiting suicide hereditary. Two of my family members (My Mom and Nephew) both committed suicide and I was wondering if that could mean thinking along the lines of doing that to yourself could have something to do with being hereditary? I just don't think I could deal with that again.

Best Tip
the thought of committing suicide is not hereditary, but the depression can be. My heartfelt sympathies are with you for the loss of your mom and nephew but again please understand when I say - thinking that you may feel the way they did can promote a sense of hopelessness and depression - so what you can do is honor their lives by keeping a tab on your feelings (so you can catch signs of depression) and go out of your way to be positive in life.
You may be having negative thoughts because you are mourning, what you have been through is most definitely very very painful, don't confuse the pain of loss with the pain of having to live (that's what most suicidal people think - they just cant do life anymore). God Bless you and I hope you get strength from the people around you. Source(s): I am a volunteer counsellor for teenagers battling depression

Others
Whew, tough stuff. Depression and other mental health problems can be hereditary, but knowing that should help educate your family and yourself about the importance of getting help.
Could be. Or it could be a coincidence. Or it could be that they experienced the same abuse by the same person (in your family) and suffered depression from that.
depression and mental illness is thought to be hereditary .. suicide is not. suicide is a conscious choice to terminate one's life .. having depression and mental illness is not a choice.

i'm sorry about your mom .. that has to be so tough on you. i had a brother who took his own life ... it's very sad.
Not necessarily suicide, but the tendency's of depression that may lead to suicide can be hereditary. You should educate yourself on the subject of depression. It is a treatable condition, and if you are prone to it, treatment can mean the difference between living well and a living hell.
If you think about the hereditary of 'depression' and suicide in your family, it WILL make you obsess about it, so try to live life to the fullest and best way you know how.
You also should seek councelling and/or some kind of therapy to help understand the family issues and how it affects you and living your life.
If you're active and are healthy and live life in a positive way, you should have a great advantage in overcoming mental illness and thinking about suicide.
Good luck with everything and don't forget to talk to a professional about your concerns and feelings.
