A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized in mental health. They are able to write prescriptions for psychiatric drugs.
A psychologist has undergone training to counsel people.
So in the case of a mental illness, a psychiatrist might make the diagnosis and prescribe and monitor the treatment while a psychologist works with the patient to help them learn to cope with their problems.

Others
A psychiatrist prescribes the drugs you need that your psychologist recommends. One has a prescription license and the other doesn't!!
Medical school. A psychologist is not a medical doctor. (There is no such thing as a prescription license.)

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and as such has completed medical school and usually will have the letters M.D. or D.O after his name.
