Issue When someone has MS does the axon actually die or is it just disabled? Best Tip no, the axon itself isn't really affected directly. The autoimmune attack is on the schwann cell, the myelinated cell that coats and insulates the axon, allowing for efficient and smooth conduction. When this is lost, impulses can't travel as far as fast as smoothly, and eventually it disables the entire nerve tract nearly completely. It's possible for the immune attack on the schwann cell to damage the axon, as the chemicals are very cytotoxic, but this is indirect damage and not the real mechanism of the disease. |
