I think you mean pursed lipped breathing. Means that you exhale against your slightly opened lips to create back pressure to keep your lungs opened up long enough to get most of the air out. If they don't purse lip breath the lungs close too fast before they can get most of their breath out and the rest of the air becomes trapped in their lungs. Source(s): I am a respiratory therapist.

I agree with the person above, pursed lipped or pursed lip breathing is most likely what the doctor is saying.

The pursed lipp breathing sounds correct. But I believe he forgot the question. In COPD Pt's the elastic part of the lungs are failing. So you can take a breath in but it is hard to exhale. Pursed lipped breathing technique is used if the pt is hyperventilating. The technique is applied to allow the pt more time to absorb oxygen in the alvoli.
